Having had two children with many medical
challenges, this line of work is a very personal one to me. However
difficult it was, I felt blessed to have the opportunity to meet
other families who had children with many different types of
disabilities. These opportunities created a turning point in my
life. In 1992 I began my career in an ICF/MR level 6 group home as a
direct care worker and was shortly promoted to house manager and then
later to Program Director. I found out about the HCS program in early
1997. I was very anxious to be a part of this new program, and in the
middle of that year, we obtained a contract and license in the MRLA
program. I became the President/Program Administrator/Minority
Shareholder of that company.
In 2000, I decided to go out on my own and
started Texas Quality Care, Inc. My heart's desire was for Texas Quality
Care, Inc. to stand above the rest. In my opinion, direct care is the
most important job in this company. I encourage our staff to not just be
an advocate for the people we serve, but also to take opportunities to teach
and allow them to advocate for themselves. My goal is for all individuals
served at Texas Quality Care, Inc. to be treated with dignity, to empower them
to reach higher standards of self-worth and to teach them about their rights
and how to advocate for themselves. Getting individuals, families, and
staff to focus more on their abilities and less on their disabilities is our
highest priority.
